I found this photo under images for sheer curtains on a conduit rod, the web site is called drabtofabdesign.com, it has a tutorial on how to achieve this look.
The reason this curtain treatment works so well is that the curtains are draped into four columns which breaks up the window space and gives interest to the window, the eyelet pleat has a nice amount of fullness and the fabric is flowy which makes it puddle softly onto the floor.
You can easily adapt this idea and use a block out curtain fabric.

Column look in a pinch pleat, floor length.
Full working curtains, which means that you can open and close the curtains.
The reason for both of these curtains to be in a column look is that for a very wide window you cannot get a rod set that is wide enough, this way the rod can have brackets at the appropriate distances, if you go too wide the rod could sag, see my article about rod sets.
